FINAL PRESENTATION

Hello Students,
I will have 2 professionals that will be interviewing/ mentoring you in a one-on-one session, each for 15-20 minutes. I will be an observer.
1. You must come in properly dressed for the position you would be applying for (based on your research)

2. You must be confident and clear in your initial presentation. First impressions count. Act professional, give a concise and clear presentation, and then interact as needed.
Introduce yourself, state the job you would like to get, talk about the design process and how it impacts your materials/design, and then go into your brand presentation (logo development and meaning, application of it, and the leave behind). Use your boards and prints as props, and share the "leave behind" piece.

3.They will have a specific rubric given to them by me, But I also want you to formulate a 5x8 card that has your top 3 topics (design details, process, presentation, speaking skills, general professionalism, or other things they may seek input on (color, illustration/photography skills, typography, etc.) in which you would like the Interviewer/mentor feedback or thoughts on. Hand this to them, as you introduce yourself.

4. The interviewers will be in part future employer and part mentors. Their observations and feedback will be from both perspectives.

5. As an employer, they will be looking for a range of skills, weaknesses, concept depth, and ask different questions. As a mentor, they will share thoughts on what comes across from looking at your brand and process, as well as your presentation.

6. In terms of specific materials required:
For Presentation: Actual business cards, mounted Mockup picture of your business packed (including your leave behind piece), actual "leave behind" piece. Any additional pieces are welcome.
For Dropbox: • High-resolution JPEG picture of business package Mockup • high-resolution JPEG pictures (3 minimum of various angles/pages of leave behind) • Final PDF project Analyzes • Any other parts of your required Process notebook that were not turned in before.
ALL THESE FILES MUST BE IN A SINGLE ZIPPED FOLDER.

I have received emails from just a couple of you... If you are not working on your FINAL version of your leave behind by tomorrow, you are late. I will not be able to communicate part of the weekend, so I expect to see everyone's progress by tomorrow (Friday). Each of you should start the weekend with final, approved pieces, leaving craftsmanship to be the only worry for the weekend.

This will dictate your final grade... As you know, this final grade needs to be as high as possible to offset the initial grades. Do not procrastinate on this, as it will be obvious on Monday.

Basically, you should impress them with your communication skills, confidence, design concept, and materials craftsmanship!  ; )
I am 100 % sure you can do this!

Final Project Update

Hello Students,

Final Project Curve Ball:  STEP 8 and STEP 10 are to be fully completed in class. Do not do it before class, nor assume you have more than the 3 hour class period. You can do this! With the ammount of research and synthesis you will have completed, I am confident You will succeed.

If you were absent when your timeline was due (11/1), please email it to me ASAP, considering the dates above.

Most class periods will be used to work on this project aside from client presentation days. I might take 30 minutes here and there for hot topics, but otherwise count on class time to develop materials.

1.  ZOO By Laura Kate

My name is Bob from the planet Gastron 7. Two days ago, I crash landed on a planet called Earth. There are life forms here, like the ones I have read about. I think they are called humans. When I crashed on the surface of this planet, I found myself in the middle of a field. A little ways off, I could see some sort of structure with humans walking in and out of it. As I got closer, the sign read “ZOO.” I have studied a few of the languages that humans speak, and I believe this word, “zoo,” is in English; however, I have no idea what it means. I decided to wait until nightfall to enter this zoo, and see why the humans were so enthused by it.

I climbed over the fences to enter the zoo, and in front of me were multiple pathways leading off in different directions. I decided to start with the one on the left. There were no lights to guide me, and I quickly found myself almost running straight into a fence. I was quite confused by the placement of this fence when suddenly, I saw something moving beyond it. At first, I thought it was some sort of monster. The creature was very tall, gold, and covered with brown spots. I was fascinated by this life form, which I had never read about in any of my studies of Earth. I continued to watch the creature for a few more minutes, and then proceeded on my path.

I came to another fence, and beyond it was a pond with some sort of strange looking creatures standing in it. Their bodies were pink, and they each had a long, thin neck with a beak at the end. These life forms had extremely thin legs as well, which made them appear very elegant. I watched as they stood in the water, while some walked around their environment.

Realizing that these fences were a reoccuring thing, I began to look out for them. I came to one enclosure after another, and observed these strange creatures. Each one was different from the next, and I found them all to be quite fascinating. Some were gigantic, gray, and wrinkly with long noses and big ears. Others were large, white, and furry, with black spots on their bodies and around their ears and eyes. Still others were black and hairy with long arms and silver backs. Finally, there were some even smaller creatures that stood upright, with black and white bodies, beaks, and wings.

Each one of these life forms was unique, yet beautiful. I decided I rather enjoyed this spot called “ZOO,” and I did not leave until I had discovered every corner of this magical place. When I finally didget back to Gastron 7, I told everyone that humans are real, and about all of the wonderful creatures that inhabit the Earth at a place called “ZOO.”

2.  Which do you think is more important: motorized vehicles like cars and airplanes or computer?  By Rachel Garrison

The first powered vehicle was invented by Richard Trevithick in 1801, it was called the ‘Puffing Devil’ and it wasan “experiemental steam driven carriage”. This was the moment when the world would be changed for the better. Ever since this day, as a nation, we have grown tremendously in this category and there are so many im-portant things to show for it. All motorized vehicles: cars, planes, boats; these things all help with transportation, shipping, emergencies, and military. Even though these are only the more well known and widespread elements, there are still so many more reasons why motorized vehicles are more important that computers.

When going from place to place, it is always nice to walk or ride a bike down the street, but what happens when you need to travel for long distances or through bad weather? Taking a motorized vehicle for transportation in these circumstances is critical due to ones safety and health. Considering that walking and riding a bike are both very healthy things to do, but in moderation. Doing these things for long periods of time can be unhealthy due to the fact that you are putting excessive stress on your muscles and could potentially damage them, especially if you need to bring more things than you can carry. This is where the next element comes in.

Having transportation for shipping or carrying large loads is one of the top reasons why motorized vehicles are more important than computers. From things such as building a bridge or shipping materials you need some sort of way to get all of the materials from point A to point B. Even though people may say that this is minor, I believe that this is truly important due to the fact that not every material you need for a project could be within range for someone to build something. We wouldn’t be able to travel overseas or be able to learn from the people in different countries because we wouldn’t be able to get there safely.

The final elements that I believe help support my opinion that motorized vehicles are more important than com-puters is emergencies and military. I decided to group these two elements together as one because they are both one in the same. Having transportation that is fast and/or reliable to people in  military, EMT’s , police, firefight-ers make the world a safer place. For example, using an ambulance makes it to where the person in need gets to the hospital in time to save their life or the firefighters can get to your house in time before it goes up in flames. The military is the same, having to travel through rough or  dangerous, conditions in unprotected areas. Using a tank is both of these scenarios is very important because of the protected armor that the tank provides and also the traction of the wheels that they use, making it easier to travel over rough landscapes.

Motorized vehicles are a very important thing in our communities today and these are only some of the reasons as to why. Understanding the overlooked details, in this case the quality of life, supports my reasoning for pick-ing motorized vehicles over computers.

3. Our Day at the Zoo - By Preston Luk

Once upon a time I visited the zoo with my niece. My niece begged and begged for us to go because she wanted to see her favorite animal, the tall spotted neck. I finally gave in to the little monster and off  we went.

When we first got  to the zoo, we had to search all around to find that tall spotted neck. While searching, we heard a loud roar and went to see what it was. It was that big mane sharp teeth that were making all that noise. My niece was so impressed on how loud he could roar that we were there for hours.

Afterwards we were getting hungry, so we decided to get a quick snack. All a sudden we heard a loud noise like a trumpet, and stomping that shook the earth. We ran an around the corner to find it was a great gray long nose big ears. One of the wisest of animals, that never forgets. It almost captured all of her attention when out of the corner of our eyes, we saw something looking over the fence at us.
It was the tall spotted neck that my niece was on a quest to see. We walked over to the pin to see this animal looking down at us like we were ants. My niece got the biggest smile to finally see her favorite animal in person for the first time. She could not contain her excitement and curiosity about the tall spotted neck that we were there for the rest of the day.

Finally went it was the time for the zoo to close. We had to get kicked out just to get her to leave, along with some bridling. On the way home, she said that I was her favorite uncle and that this is the best day she has ever had. We both left the zoo that day feeling great and exhausted, never to return again.

4. Pretend you get to make one rule that everyone in the world must follow. What rule do you make and why?  By Kira Kowolik

We are affected by people’s actions, it’s a kinetic cycle of action and reaction between beings. In this current society of with racial tension, the only way to alleviate hatred is for the government to prevent more violence with a worldwide solution. By creating a utopia for people to experience true happiness and peace. We can control this utopia by following one simple rule; treat others with kindness. Not just kindness, but a true understanding that we are all equals, and deserve respect.

Why would this rule make the world different? Turn on any media outlet and there will be a story about violence or terror somewhere in the world. Corrupted political leaders give people the idea that violence is okay, which provokes more destruction. If everyone would follow a law that would benefit society, what would happen then?
The world would experience a revolutionary change if this rule went into place. Less racial prejudice, lower crime, homelessness rates and poverty. If everyone cared about people’s wellbeing as their own we would have open doors to freedom and create a new way of life.  Peace for humankind has been a challenging goal over the decades, and if it is achieved it is always short lived.

With so much revolution in our technology, and advancements in society the one thing that we haven’t fixed is our blatant disregard of each other as humans. People take advantage, lash out, and start the vicious cycle of unnecessary violence. The world is so close to war, it’s only a missile away from destroying life as we know it. It’s uncertain when or even if there will be another war, but fighting in its entirety will never stop unless people change.

It’s in the worst moments that people are brought together out of shared empathy, sadness, or anger. Humans have an amazing ability to grow stronger as they are unified; supporting each other in the most challenging difficulties. It’s this ability that can overcome hatred, racism, and violence. In the moments where this weakness is shown, it becomes a shared strength. If kindness was an actual law, our society would be blessed with knowing our world is at peace with each other.

5.  Eryn Speer

“What’s that bright light? Where am I? What’s going on?” These were the thoughts swirling around in James’ head as he arose. As James started to stand up from where he had been sleeping, he felt a sharp pain in his back. Soon, he realized that not only had he been lying on the ground, but a jagged rock had also been cutting into his lower back. He winced as he stood. “There’s that light again” he thought to himself, shielding his eyes from the lightthis hand as he looked up to see. The light was not hot; it gave off absolutely no heat. In fact, James was neither hot nor cold, he was perfectly comfortable. “Am I inside? No. I can’t be. I was just lying on the ground” James thought. Still waiting for his eyes to adjust to the light, James tried to get his bearings. Slowly, he began to look around. There were trees, bushes, grass, a stream, the small area of dirt and rocks he was standing in, and the light; still no heat, but too bright to look into. The light was straight up in the middle of the sky. “It must be around noon.” James thought.

Suddenly, a disturbing feeling came over him, something wasn’t right. “It’s too quiet.” James thought. Even in his own head he knew that sounded clichĂ©, but it was true. Immediately he began to notice everything that was missing. There was no breeze, no voices from any other people, even the wasn’t really a stream. “The stream isn’t even moving, it’s more like a pond.” James realized. Cautiously he began to touch the grass, the trees, and the water. “If I’m not outside, all of these things cant be real,” but he was wrong. The grass, the trees, the water, leaves, dirt, rocks, everything was as real as could be and perfectly healthy. James, still uncertain as to what was happening, began to walk.

He walked out of the dirt, across a small grassy clearing, and to the woods. Contemplating whether or not to go into the woods alone, he stood still, nervous. After about a minute, he decided to continue, he needed to find out where he was. However, after about twenty feet into the woods, he ran into something so hard it made him fall down backwards. “What the heck!” he shouted, although there was nothing and no one there to hear him. He stood up, and began taking small steps very slowly with his hands held out in front of him, and sure enough, there it was! His right palm hit it first, what felt like a cold, hard wall, only to James his hand looked like it was held out in midair. He began to move his hand to the right, and the wall kept going. Walking with his hands out to the side now, he started walking faster and faster. The wall, he realized, was curved and he started to feel himself walking in a rather large circle. James, soon out of the woods, was walking in the stream. He continued to follow the wall out of the stream, through the grassy clearing and back to where he started. He guessed the circle was about a hundred feet in diameter.

Tired and hungry and confused, James retreated back to the clearing. He decided it was more of a meadow than a clearing. He started to take notice of everything around him. There were so many types of beautiful flowers and plants, but it still didn’t change the fact that James was trapped. A few hours went by, then suddenly the ground, about thirty feet away from him, began to shake. A crack appeared on the ground and light began to flood in through the crack. This was a different type of light than the one overhead, a light more natural. “Sunlight?” James thought. The crack began moving upwards and James realized it must be the wall he had felt previously. He approached it carefully with his hands out in front of him just as before. His hands hit the surface, James heart dropped, “Still trapped” he thought. But as his eyes adjusted to the light streaming in, he saw the strangest sight. He was looking out of some sort of a window at a few odd looking creatures.

The creatures were all different shapes and sizes. Short and tall, skinny and fat, most had four legs, some had tails, and all were covered in fur. The first he saw had a very long neck and was tall will spots all over the body. Another had a long tail and was hanging by it, upside down from a tree. Another creature came by the window, closer than the others. This one was small and wasn’t walking but “hopping?” James thought. The creature’s ears were much larger than the rest of its body. More and more continued to come. James couldn’t do anything but watch, jaw open, confused. They seemed to be coming towards him, but they all stopped before they hit the window. They were all staring. Soon there was a large crowd of the creatures standing before him. Next came static from an intercom, it was coming from the other side of the window, but James could still hear it. To the right of the window James could see one of the creatures standing on a podium. This one was very large, larger than all the others, and gray. It had the biggest ears James had ever seen and a long tube protruding from its face. Then it spoke, and James realized that whatever it was, it was female. The creature had a soft, higher pitch voice, but it spoke with authority.

She said, “Hello everyone! Welcome to the Brooklyn Zoo and happy Freedom Day! As you know, on this day fifty years ago our friends and family stood up and fought for us to be able to live as we wish, and what a day that was! The Brooklyn Zoo would like to thank you all for coming it its unveiling of the first display! James was born here at the zoo and has been living with us for 32 years! As you all are aware, up until now the zoo has just been used as a place of housing for their kind, but today that all changes! We wiped his memory yesterday to give him a more unique and pure experience here in the meadow display. If he seems a little confused and skittish, do not be alarmed, just proceed to the glass slowly. James is currently in a state-of-the-art display. While the curtains are down, his enclosure looks to him as if it goes on for miles, however if the curtains are raised, as they are now, he will be able to see us through the front part of the enclosure, but the back part will appear as usual. It is his kind that used to keep us locked up, but since Freedom Day and thanks to our ancestors, we have been able to live our lives as they are meant to be! That’s why for the 50th anniversary we decided to reopen the Brooklyn Zoo but this time we will stand proudly on the outside looking in! So without further ado, the moment we have been waiting for, for so long, JAMES!”

MANDATORY CREATIVE EXERCISE

Here it is! Have fun!

RULES of the game

1. Choose one of the questions below. Do not ask classmates, friends, or anyone else for their opinions or ideas. Let yourself be the only "thinking" variable for the game.

2. Write 3-5 paragraphs –using elevated language, correct spelling and proper grammar– responding to one of the questions chosen. Be mindful of writing something cohesive with a beginning, middle, and end.

3. Once you finish writing, draw a simple illustration of your story. This simple illustration should reflect your writing. It may not "make sense" for the viewer that has not read your piece, so do not worry about that (audience). It's simply a visual translation of your writing. You can make this visual as intricate or simple as you like.

4. Place the PDF document (1 page for the writing, 1 page for the image) in D2L by Saturday 12:00am.

5. I will post your pieces here in the blog by midday on Sunday, and each of you must "intelligently critique" two classmate's work. Talk about the ideas developed, ask questions, give constructive criticism to the writing and visual, etc. USE artistic language, clarity, and kindness in your critiques.

*** Note that your critiques allow me to understand how you think critically, what you know in terms of elements of art and principles of design, and how creative you are.

6. Make sure each classmate has a critique. If you see a story with a couple of critiques and one with none, please critique the student that does not have feedback.

7. Critiques must be completed by Wednesday 3:30pm (10/4).

QUESTIONS to choose from

1. Write a story about the zoo without using the names of any animals

2. Pretend you get to make one rule that everyone in the world must follow. What rule do you make and why?

3. Which do you think is more important: motorized vehicles like cars and airplanes or computer? Why

Writing your concepts for client #3

Hello Students, I already received a couple of students'revised covers! Great.

By Friday 5 pm, I need everyone's revisions (client 1 and 3), as well and your written concept for the client 1.

Please be mindful of grammar, spelling, etc. Also, make sure that your concept "fits" their theme!
Empowerment, Collaborations, and Community are big words to use on your concept document.

Please turn all approved covers, process notebooks and concept documents to the Client 3 Materials folder in D2L by Monday noon.

I also request you turn in the same materials for Client 1 and 2. For these, please turn in final (as they are now) logos, collaterals, process notebook, and concept documents. The folders are ready in D2L.

Client 3 production and Client 1 updates

Please come prepared to present your Client 3 covers to your classmates and me. You must have 3 DIFFERENT ideas to present, printed in color, full size in 8.5 x11.
Make sure you are also working on updateingClient 1 logos as requested. I can give you feedback on it tomorrow. They (pristine documents) are due Friday noon. Each student must turn in a PDF document with 3 pages: Written concept, color logo occupying a 5"x 5" area, and a black and white logo in the same size.

Friday, September 15, 2017

All Logos MUST BE SENT as FINALS along with COLLATERAL pieces by tonight!

As I stated in class, please deliver a folder with low-res PDFs of your pieces to be presented to Elm Street. Please deliver one piece for Morocco as discussed in class. These pieces should be 11'x14".
All these pieces should be in my inbox by 12 pm today, again, per our discussion in class. If you have already submitted them to D2L, please do so through my email as I can't access D2L right now. No excuses as I can see the time stamps in D2L when I do access it.
I will give you feedback by 10 am Saturday morning, if anything needs to be changed.
Then, by end of day Saturday, ALL the written concepts must be emailed to me, again by 12 pm. Feedback by noon on Sunday.
Your boards should be mounted and pristine by Sunday. Do not Forget a label in the back stating your team names.

Not good Progress

Ok guys, I have looked for updates all day.... Received one version from Eryn, and few from Kira... I hoped to have seen A LOT more.
I will check email one more time tonight, around 8:30pm. After that, I will be available to respond in the morning.
Final logos are still by the end of day DUE TOMORROW. If you don't allow yourself to go through the "back and forth process", this is not going to go well.

Come to class Prepared

Hello Students,
For those of you who have turned in logos, collateral, thumbnails, I have given you individual feedback either through email or through the D2L dropbox. Please check and follow up.
Please come with at least one STRONG digitized logo and 2-5 pieces of collateral for EACH client 1 and client 2. Bring print outs, please. I will go over individually with each of you, and we will select the concepts that will be presented to clients.
I will continue to be available for feedback, as I get new materials. If my feedback suggests the concept is strong, but that you need variations in design, please attempt to do it so...
Please email with concerns or new materials. A couple of you have been great in communication, and not giving up in your attempts! Kudos to you. If you have been discouraged, and not communicative, I am here and available. I WANT YOU TO DO WELL... if you want it as well.

C2 presentation date changed -

DO NOT Celebrate... This is bad...

I understand that you might not have practiced much logo development or research analysis, but aside from the links I posted, there are thousands of resources online to help you get better... The key here is that you MUST WANT TO SUCCEED.

I was forced to change our C2 (Elm Street client) meeting for next Monday, the 18th, because of a lack of materials to present. As of this moment, I have only received one completed logo with collaterals. This IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! Jillian will not be there, but Christopher and other board members will be present. These are REAL WORLD clients, and if you can't handle this, you need to revisit your career goals. They are counting on us to provide them with a real identity.

Most of you were late sending stronger (requested) ideas, and most of you are still very much struggling to CREATE something, instead of using a 'lantern' to symbolize the whole idea of the event.

"A good logo is the cornerstone of a brand. It helps customers understand what they do, who they are and what they value. That’s a lot of responsibility on a tiny image! A logo needs to be original and memorable for the greatest impact. An interesting and intelligent combination and use of shapes, colors, typefaces and other elements can create an image that is simple, yet rich with a concept synonymous with the organization."

I am sure the client could have downloaded a lantern (free art), added text to it, and arrived at similar conceptual results as some of you have. As usual, I am being blunt and direct. I really don't think we have time to mess around...

Anyway, you must bring your best (printed) concept along with your collaterals pieces (EACH OF YOU), and we will select which ones will be presented on Monday. DO NOT COME EMPTY HANDED or with a "lantern clip art and type", as THAT is not acceptable at the 4000 level classes.

I will continue to give you as much feedback as I can if you like until we meet on Wednesday.

You MUST also bring the SAME materials (Logo and collateral) for Morocco by Wednesday. We will go through one client at the time, make the necessary changes and proceed from there. We will be presenting Morrocco at 3:45 pm and Elm Steet at 5 pm.

These clients ARE COUNTING on you.

K. Lord.

School Closing

Hello students, KSU has cancelled classes for tomorrow. For us, it's not a great thing, as we still have our client meeting scheduled for Wednesday. If the weather escalates, we will deal with it then.

With that said, I need you to prepare for client presentation on Wednesday. In order to try to achieve the best possible outcome, I need to see as much material from each of you as possible. As of now, we only have ONE finished logo to present for Elm Street. I sent everyone feedback on your concepts and NEED to see digitized variations no later than tomorrow, as you will then only have Tuesday to apply your logos to collateral pieces, print and board them for presentation (due Wednesday).

Everything requested with a due date is a grade, so please manage your time well. Because we are not meeting tomorrow, I need these digitized concepts by NOON on MONDAY, so that I can give you feedback and  establish which logos will be presented. Feedback will be given between 1-3 pm. At that point, you must communicate with your teams and prepare for presentation.

If there are questions or concerns, please do not hesitate on contacting me. Open lines of communication is a necessity in this course and situation (between team members, and between students and faculty).

Worst case, you might have 2 presentations next Monday, but I will try my best not to let this happen.

Finally, your also had Client 1 concepts due tomorrow. This is secondary in priority, but VERY important, as we don't have ANY logos to present to our client 2 at the moment. Digitize your best ideas and send them to me (individually) through Dropbox. If you are not sure which concepts to digitize, communicate sooner for feedback.

Stay safe and focused... after this and next week, schedules should get easier and less intense!!!!!!!

Make sure your time management skills are sharpened!

• Eliminate distractions.

• Be focused on the task at hand. ...

• Use a calendar. ...

• Use a checklist. ...

• Find your productive time. (Are you a morning person or a night person? You'll be more efficient if you work when you're at your best.

• Get organized. ...

• Follow your plan

• Overcome procrastination

Divide and conquer. (Break up larger projects, such as research papers, field studies, and cumulative finals, into manageable chunks. And spread the stages over a reasonable number of days. Always add some extra time above what you think you need because usually there's a major crunch or crisis toward the end)

• Don't take 10-day holidays. (Some students think it's their God-given right to take off a few days before Thanksgiving holidays and spring break—and a few days after. Instead, consider it your religious duty to tote your textbooks to Cancun and consult them while enjoying a drink.)

Set priorities... (During periods of peak work—midterms, seminar presentations, and exam times, for instance—shed commitments that are not absolutely necessary. Tell your parents you can't worry about their Christmas plans; tell your frat head that you can't be bothered with his community service project; tell your boss you need a much-reduced work schedule; tell your minister that someone else needs to help with the reception after church. There are only 168 hours in a week, and you'll be managing your time a whole lot better if you devote yourself exclusively to schoolwork. At least a few weeks a semester.)

• Schedule rewards...

• Get a good night's sleep.

Terminology...

Design Brief - Document Designer uses to learn more about the client and stablish project information.

Process Book - Student documentation on project development.

This will make you think...

1. Interpret; don’t translateTranslating your message into the local language is not enough to ensure your intent will be understood or interpreted correctly.

2. Value is contextual
The quality of your implementation has always been important in maintaining a certain brand image. However, when crossing cultural boundaries, the nuances of what denotes quality become less predictable and thus extremely important to decode.

3. Playing follow the leader
Since each industry or service has its own local conditions and customers, you cannot assume that a set of customers for a particular product or service will act the same as the one you are targeting. Nor should you assume that if a strategy similar to yours was successful for your brand in one market or region, it can be replicated as is.

4. Making assumptions
This point may feel redundant yet needs to be made: we often realize that there are assumptions we may be making while shaping a brand or communication strategy for a different market. Being mindful of these assumptions can often mean the difference between success and failure.

SCHEDULE UPDATES & TO DO'S

Per our discussion, here are some important dates to add to your master calendar:

8/30 - Team work in class/Individual production time
9/6 - Individual pieces due for client 1 and 2 (Logos for client #1 and Logo with 2 additional collateral pieces for client #2 (Lantern Series Project).
9/11 - Team work/presentation for client 2 work time
9/13 - Individual pieces due for client 3 + Presentation Client 2 + Team work/presentation for client 2 work time.
9/18 - Presentation Client 1 + Team work
9/20 - Team work/presentation for client 3 work time + Conversation
9/25 - Presentation Client 3 + Team work.

I will follow up with more specifics after September.

Also, please copy me on all client emails, and forward me the feedbacks if I am not included in the message.

Keep working on your process books, and make the content rich. The more information (thoughts, explanation, details, facts, images, thumbnails, digital evolutions) the better. Remember you are designers, so make it aesthetically pleasing... A piece I would 'enjoy' reading it. That includes good typography!!! On your covers, please include your team members and positions even though your process document is an individual piece.

Finally, I suggest you build a master spread sheet with your: teams, positions, clients, projects, dates (meetings, productions & presentations), tasks, etc. Aside from a learning experience, it is an extremely useful piece for this class, as well as a great tool for time management.

Positions for your design team

We will discuss field positions further this semester, but for now, you need:
- a team leader/admin/manager (to do direct client communication, and project/time management),
- a production/editing director (to overlook all the completion, editing and details of pieces),
- a presentation director (to overlook and innovate all presentations) in your teams.

If you think of another useful position or want to discuss this further, let me know.

Recaping our conversations and class position.

The classroom is being run as A WORK ENVIRONMENT with tight deadlines which you MUST MEET to successfully pass this course. Do plan to be on time each day. No excuses will be accepted!

The work is rigorous, the expectations are high!

Research, brainstorming, printing, and presentation prep can be done outside of class, while "actual production" must be done and completed in class... Please come to the classroom prepared with materials that you will need to do all work.

You will be graded individually based on the work you produce for each client. The final presented piece will not be graded. You will also be graded on presentations and teamwork. Time management will play a VERY IMPORTANT role in this class, and if you feel you need assistance, I will be happy to share resources with you.

You've been assigned to a team, so make sure that you are meeting and communicating with your team frequently. All finished work done in this class must show a high level of mastery and be fit to be out in the real world representing a business and yourself.

29 Things Young Designers Need to Know

Getting ready for our first client

Per our discussion, your teams must be ready to engage in a professional meeting on Monday, where the client will present the information and you  (the design team) will take notes and ask questions that can help you succeed in producing something great!

I need your team briefs by Saturday (8/19) at 5 pm so that I can give you feedback before Monday. Remember to always reflect your position as a designer with any shareable document or designed piece. If you do not get a direct email from me, that means that are no changes required to your team briefs.

I also need your positions within the team. As we will shuffle the team members around for different clients, I would prefer that positions would also change. It's important to experience different roles!
For now, I just need your team positions for client 1.

I added a "Best Practices" document to the resources on the right, and I encourage you to read it before Monday.

Don't hesitate to contact me: Klord@ Kennesaw.edu or katialord@gmail.com (faster response)

How to write a client brief

https://designschool.canva.com/blog/effective-design-brief/

The start of our "Business"

It was great meeting each one of you yesterday. I know you will learn a lot and enjoy this course. It will give you a clear idea of what to expect after you graduate.

I just want to reiterate and put a few things in writing, so that you can refer to it and understand the expectations clearly.

1. We will set up this class like a business, a small studio with an Art director and 2 design teams... Don't be fired!!!!!

2. Be proactive with your time management, be punctual with our meetings, and professional in the way you carry yourself in all aspects.

Read your syllabus and please bring the signed form on Wednesday.

Please refer to the documents on the right and write a client brief based on the resources shared. We will discuss this tomorrow in class and combine the documents into one great brief for you to use next week. Please do this in In Design, but bring a PDF format to share.

We will discuss Best Practices and Design Process on Wednesday (tomorrow), aside from the client brief.

On the administrative side, you MUST have Publications AND packaging before taking this class (you may be enrolled at the same time). If you do not have them, you are not allowed to be in this course. You also must keep a 3.0 (B) in all concentration courses.

Do not hesitate to ask any questions!!

Quick Introduction!

Hello Students,

In this course, you will learn how to be part of a creative team and apply what you have learned to
“real world” practices. Students will have real clients and projects, and will engage in problem analysis, problem-solving, critical thinking, and cognitive development. Time management is certainly a important tool for this class!

We will discuss stereotypical thinking and encourage greater inter-cultural understanding, social responsibility, interpersonal development, and build leadership and communication skills. We will also advance the knowledge of commercial printing, paper specifications, vendor resources, strategy plans and time managements. Finally, we will sharpen your business and presentation skills.

This blog will be our MAIN point o contact and resource deposit. I encourage you to 'follow' the blog, so you can get notifications of new posts. Otherwise, you must check the blog on a daily basis, to make sure you do not miss crucial information, dates or resources.

We will also utilize the blog not only as a feedback/critique tool within our classroom, but we will also showcase our work here and have peer reviews! It may also serve as an additional presentation tool to your clients!

Because the blog is accessible even on smart phones, it's your responsibility to gather the information/activities/resources placed here at all times.

I look forward to meeting you on Tuesday!! We will have fun, and produce amazing projects in this class!
